Baby Thompson!

So... this summer my husband and I went on a family trip to Copper Basin. Every summer the Thompson clan gets together and goes camping and rides motorcycles for two weeks. I haven't been able to join my husband on this trip for the last couple of years because I was involved in shows at the Playmill. However, this past summer I was only in two shows, so I could go with my in-laws for a couple of days. Jake and I were excited to get out of West Yellowstone for a couple of days and enjoy the great outdoors!

The first day in Copper Basin I had a refresher course on riding a motorcycle and we set out on an easy trail. I did great! I kept up with everyone with ease and I was getting excited to try some harder trails. The next day we ate a delicious breakfast and started getting the bikes ready for a longer ride. My mother-in-law and I left camp on our bikes before the others because we wanted to take our time on the trail without holding up the rest of the family.

My mother-in-law led the way and I followed close behind. We had made it about one mile out of camp when we came to a bend in the gravel road. As I slowed down to make the corner, my back tire began fish tailing and I shot off into the sagebrush. My front tire hit a huge boulder which sent me flying through the air. When I finally landed, I hit another boulder about 20 feet from the road.

By this time, my mother-in-law had made it around the corner and looked behind her to make sure I was following. When she didn't see me, she turned around and started back towards camp. As she made her way towards camp, she rode right past me because she couldn't see me in the brush. I laid there motionless. Unable to move. I knew that I had broken something because I was numb. I couldn't feel my back. I didn't want to try to move because I didn't know if my neck was broken and I didn't want to worsen my injuries. I finally decided that I was going to take off my motorcycle gear and throw it into the air in hopes of someone seeing me.

After about 10 minutes of throwing my gloves into the air, my husband and brother-in-law came speeding towards me. They pulled to the side of the road and ran to my side. I have never seen my husband so scared. It was at that moment that I realized the severity of my accident. My brother-in-law remained calm and began asking me what I was feeling. When I explained that I had no feeling in my mid back to the back of my knees he decided that I needed to be helped into the car and taken to the hospital. I somehow made it into the car and endured the long bumpy trip to the hospital.

When we arrived at the ER, doctors were notified of my condition and I was immediately tied to a gurney and given a neck brace.

Now... go back one week. Jake and I had been trying to have a baby for a year. One week before my accident I had gone to the doctors office and received a pregnancy test. The test came back negative. I was heartbroken. Jake and I decided that we were simply going to move forward with our lives and stop worrying about when we were going to be blessed with a baby.

Ok... jump back to the ER. When I was being carried into the emergency room doctors asked me if there was any chance I was pregnant. I told them I knew I wasn't because I had just been given a pregnancy test a week before and it was negative. My sister-in-law heard the question and told nurses that they needed to administer another pregnancy test because she had a "feeling that they needed to."

The nurses took some blood and informed us that they would be unable to give me any pain medication or perform any X-Rays before the pregnancy test results came back.

I laid on the gurney in pain for about thirty minutes with my husband and my in-laws by my side. When the nurse finally came back, she informed those in the room that she needed to speak to my husband and I for a few moments. She quickly ushered my in-laws out and turned to my husband and I. She said the two words I had waited to hear for over one year... "YOU'RE PREGNANT!"

My husband and I looked to one another with disbelief. Finally! We couldn't believe that we were finally getting the one thing we wanted most in the whole world.

We had about twenty seconds to celebrate together before my nieces came running into the room. The nurse told us that because of the baby, they would be unable to perform an X-ray. They sent me to another hospital that could perform an MRI. Naturally, we had to inform my husbands family about the pregnancy so they would understand why I was being transferred. I soon got my mother on the phone and had to explain to her why I wasn't going to be able to get an X-ray. The conversation went something like this...

Me: "Hi, mom... I'm doing OK. We still don't know what is going on because they can't give me an X-ray and I haven't gotten any pain medication yet."
Mom: "Well why the heck not? What's going on?"
Me: "Mom... I'm pregnant!"
Mom: "What the hell?!?"

She was absolutely shocked. I will never forget her response :)

I was taken to EIRMC in Idaho Falls, Idaho where they performed an MRI and found that I had broken my sacrum and I had severely bulged some of the discs in my back.

After a trip to the baby doctor, we found out that Baby Thompson will join our family on march 10, 2013. We can't wait :)

My injuries have healed up really well. I still get quite sore and my growing belly is starting to put some strain on my back which is something that will only get worse as I get bigger. My sacrum is still causing some numbness which causes some discomfort. However, I am so lucky and I cannot wait to be a mother!

Anyways... long story but this was an incredibly memorable moment and we will have a great story to tell our baby!!

This was taken right after I found out about the baby :)
